Projects underway
The Jacques Cartier Bridge is a five-lane bridge that links Montreal to the south shore of the Saint Lawrence at Longueuil. Access and exit lanes link the bridge to L’Île Sainte-Hélène. The total length of the bridge (including approaches) is 11,236 feet or 2 1/6 miles (3.4 km).
Some 35.8 million vehicles a year use the Jacques Cartier Bridge. By comparison, in 1962 the number of vehicles using the bridge was about 18 million.
The Jacques Cartier Bridge was the object of a significant rejuvenation project in 2000-2001 when the deck was completely rehabilitated. The entire deck was replaced by factory-made, prefabricated cement slabs. Currently, we are undertaking a very similar rehabilitation project on the deck of the Honoré Mercier Bridge.
As significant rehabilitation work has already taken place, there are not major projects planned for this structure in 2011-2012. However, there are a number of ongoing projects that will require closing lanes for the replacement of supports under the bridge.
